Le Mans 24 Hours 2014 – Through The Fence

Unfortunately there was no media pass for this year’s Le Mans but one of the reasons I love returning to the ‘Great Race’ is the opportunity to shoot during ever changing light conditions allowing you to work round the problems of shooting through catch fencing. Also, a few more beers were downed than when I was working last year!

Great race, great mates, great times.

  1. Hi James,

I am going to Le Mans this year for the first time and will be photographing the event from behind the fence.

Are there any spots in particular around the track that you could recommend for me to try?

    • Hi Sam,

A first trip to Le Mans! Happy days! You wont regret it.

As for good positions to shoot from; off the top of my head… Arnarge is worth the trip at dusk just to see the action there but the viewing bank is relatively close to the track on the run into the corner which is handy for shooting especially if you dont have a particularly long lens. Its good for break discs and flames at night! Another place which is good is the southern most end of Maison Blanc campsite. It has pretty good views of the exit of the porsche curves (good panning practice!) and you can get right up to the fence. The inside of the first turn on the run up to the chicane before the dunlop bridge can be a good spot too although around that area of the track the run off can be quite large so you can be quite far away.

The good thing is that with a 24 hour race you have plenty of time to cover as much as you want to!

I hope that helps a bit! Enjoy!
